It varies a little depending on where you are in the world, but for me, today is the Aries full moon. It's a fire phoenix full moon that marks a phase of cyclic regeneration born out of releasing the past. It's a little scary walking into the fire to reduce the past to ashes, but good things come out of it in the end.
The phoenix is a very symbolic and appropriate totem for those with strong natal Aries placements such as Sun, Rising, Moon, Vertix, Part of Fortune, or one of the Nodes. Aries is the beginning of the zodiac cycle, Pisces being the ending, which is another reason the symbolism of the phoenix is so fitting. In Greek mythology, the phoenix was an immortal bird that would live hundreds of years then build a pyre and burn itself up so it could be reborn from the ashes.
Today's Aries full moon is the day that the phoenix would burn itself up in the pyre to be reborn anew. And how powerful the Aries full moon is this year, happening on the 13th of the month! Thirteen breaks down into the number four, which is about our personal, internal and external, foundations. Two strong symbols of personal transformation combined into one astrological event.
It's not uncommon to see the Aries full moon described as “aggressive". This usually comes with a warning to watch what we say to others as it can be misconstrued and kick up a firestorm. I don't necessarily subscribe to that. I suppose the Aries full moon can be viewed as aggressive, since Aries is ruled by Mars. However, even when it is in an Aries placement, the moon is still the emotional moon ruled by Taurus. It's not a direct Mars hit, in my opinion. I prefer to view the Aries Full Moon period as the start of a new emotional cycle, also as a time of releasing and letting go of the past. We let go of these things, no matter how painful it is, so we can step forward into a brand new phase of our lives.
However you personally choose to view this Aries full moon, my best advice for circumnavigating our raw emotional feelings and the pain of walking into the pyre to be transformed, is to focus on yourself instead of worrying about what other people are doing. This is a time to let go of control and give other people their space. The phoenix focuses on its own transformation, not that of others. And it always goes into the fire alone.
Why does giving others space work? Because no matter how hard we try, we can't force our transformative fiery change on anyone else. It is my belief that the Aries full moon gets a bad rap because of our fearful inability to leave others alone to walk their own path to their own pyre. That is the real source of the aggression. We try to impose ourselves upon others. Just like us, others have to go through their phoenix transformation alone.
As the saying goes, if you want to change the world, change yourself first. And one more for the road: Be the change you wish to see in the world. Both of these mottos require self-focus, self-action, and self-responsibility... all of which are also Aries themes, being that Aries is the “I am" sign of the zodiac.
If you are feeling irritated or challenged during this period, take a step back and give yourself plenty of space. Let go of control, focus on yourself, and allow the transformation to take place within. A beautiful new you is going to be born from the ashes of your inner phoenix. Hang in there.
Wishing you many blessings. xoxo
